06 Oct Behind the ride – Celeste’s RYDE Experience
So I work as a part-time private home tutor and have to travel from house to house each day. It can be quite time-consuming (and definitely energy-draining). It does not help that I travel during peak hours for tuition. To the cab lovers out there, you should know how much the peak hour surcharge costs! It burns a hole in my pocket.
That was when I chanced upon RYDE from a friend. I went over to their website to find out more about this new initiative. I was bought over by the idea of “saving cost”. Hey, saving money? I need to save up for my university fees desperately! And guess what? The minimum amount for a RYDE trip is $5 and the maximum is only $15! To make things better, there is no peak hour surcharge at all. This is an insanely pocket-friendly app to use! I downloaded the app from the App Store right away. The sign-up process was easy and I just had to upload a profile picture of myself as well as a picture of my ID. So I heard they screen through both their drivers and riders to make sure that it is a safe community for all. Not any random stranger can pick you up along the streets. A well-thought-out initiative indeed!
After I uploaded the photos, the “red cross” beside my profile picture became a “green tick”. This means my profile is verified! I made an advance request for a ride from Jurong East to Town the night before. After an hour or so, I got a notification from the RYDE app that I have gotten a match and a credit is deducted. Oh yes! These credits serve as a booking fee and one credit is deducted for every successful match. The credits are available for in-app purchase using a credit or debit card. But I got $5 worth of credits for free by typing in the promotional code <RYDE255> under the “Share” tab! Feel free to use the promotional code for free credits and share it with your friends too! 🙂
So the day came and I was slightly nervous about my first ride. I called the driver through the app to confirm the pick-up time and location. The app shows you the details of your trip and that includes the driver’s profile picture, first name, picture of his car and his car plate number etc. The amount you have to pay to the driver in cash at the end of the trip is also reflected. Anyway, he picked me up and I was on my way! I honestly thought it would be awkward meeting a stranger for a first time and travelling side by side with nothing to say to each other. But I was so wrong! We had a really enjoyable conversation discussing everything under the sun! Before I knew it, I reached my destination. I had to pay him $10.70 for the trip but he was nice enough to settle with $10.
Shortly after, I went to the RYDE app to “end trip” and gave a review to the driver. I gave him 5 stars and wrote a short comment. I think it is cool that both drivers and riders provide reviews about each other. In the long run, it helps RYDE to regulate its users and provide a safer platform for all. I have been actively using this app for about 2 months now and have gotten to know a lot more friends. It really helps with the social networking part! However, I think it is still a rather new initiative so I do not get matches 100% all the time. But then again, RYDE is not a taxi booking app as these carpooling drivers usually pick me up only when it is along the way. But every time I get a RYDE, I save quite a bit! I genuinely hope that more people will join the pool because this carpool idea is going to be the next BIG thing! Trust me, you will be able to save a lot using this app! Switch to RYDE today! 🙂
