SUNS OUT, BUNS OUT! 5 spots for you and your hot dog to enjoy this weekend

PetEnjoyingAtTheBeach

Did you know that not all parks in Singapore are pet-friendly? We sure didn’t either, until now. A quick trip to NParks website will list some of these places where pets are not permitted, mainly in an effort to preserve the existence of rich biodiversity. Some of these places include selected walks within Singapore Botanic Gardens, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and even the MacRitchie trails! A full list of places to avoid can be found here.

Fret not! In this guide, we aim to share with you some of the best scenic destinations aside from the neighbourhood Dog Run Areas available near you.

1. Coney Island

Hidden beaches and dog carriages for rental, what is not to love about Coney Island? Although you might need to bang out your trusty mosquito repellent and a nice bottle of water for you and your pet, Coney Island is still a great destination for all to consider on weekends. Some of the common tips to consider before your trip include preparing lots of water, planning a route to explore and emptying your bladder before starting your adventure.

Here is a pro-tip for you – go to the bike rental store early to snag one of the four available carriages. This way, your furry friend can be by your side whilst you take in the scenic view of the island.

Oh! Do not forget to take a mandatory snapshot at the now iconic entrance of Coney Island – the west and east gates are completely identical, so snap away! Pics or it didn’t happen, am I right?

2. The Rail Corridor

We are not going to lie, this walking trail is quite a stretch but that is part of its appeal. Take note that this is a destination we would recommend all to do a little bit of research before heading down, the good news is however, extensive detailed guides of this unique destination can easily be found online. Choose and customise your own journey on this extensive trail; there is even a glow-in-the-dark section made from a special porous concrete which illuminates the path at night!

For those of us born in the 90s or earlier, we definitely have some vague memory of a train that used to service the intercountry KLM rails. What is left of this historical land use is now mostly converted into walking trails. This secluded path will definitely tingle your explorative senses and give you a memorable appreciation of the tracks that once functioned.

This trail is one that will deliver an experience like no other, taking you away from the regular ‘garden in the city’ experience.

Recommended Car Drop-off: Multiple Entrances, dependent on route.
Opening Hours: Open 24/7, daily.

3. Marina Barrage

Are you really Singaporean if you have not already been to Marina Barrage? This scenic field is the most ideal spot for evening R&R sessions or for a nice sunny picnic with friends. Here, you will find that kite flying is not so much of a dead sport in Singapore. These wonderful sights plus the scenic backdrop of the city skyline make for some great Instagram pictures. We’d recommend bringing your own food and enjoying a nice evening to unwind especially if you would like to avoid the blistering heat. Just remember to keep your pets on a leash here – they are pretty strict about that.

Perhaps one of the best parts of this place is that it remains a walking distance away from the picturesque Gardens by the Bay. Although your fur friend will not be allowed inside the dome enclosures, the outdoor area remains pet-friendly to all. Both places also have convenient access to pick up and drop off points – making it ideal for you to book a ride to and from the place.

Recommended Car Drop-off: Marina Barrage Pick up/Drop off point
Address: 8 Marina Gardens Dr, Singapore 018951
Opening Hours: Open 24/7, daily.

4. Tanjong Beach

This destination is for all the sun lovers! Well, why not plan to bring your favourite fur friend to the wonderful beach with you this weekend? We would recommend checking the weather app prior just to make sure your plans do not get cut short, but otherwise, this is such an ideal destination for you and your pet to enjoy. Some say dogs are allowed to be leashless here, but of course we would caution that you keep an eye on your pet at all times for an abundance of reasons.

Of course the beach is more than just sun and sand, you can even have picnics, play some sports or just pose glamorously for your Instagram feed. Bear in mind to layer on some sunscreen to avoid those sun burns that peel for weeks on end!

Kindly note that with effect from October 2020, all beach goers are to register in light of COVID-19 safety distancing measures. It might sound like a hassle at first, but it also means crowd control and more comfort for all visitors!

5. Telok Blangah Hill Park

We are pretty sure by now that the 5.8km Kent Ridge Park to Harbourfront is not new information to anyone, but have you ever noticed that somewhere in this trail, there is actually a great spot to explore in itself? The Telok Blangah Hill Park is situated along this much longer trail and a much better alternative for those not looking to complete a long and tiring hike.

This park sits at the opening of the Henderson Waves Bridge – a quick shortcut for those only looking for a leisure walk and great views to soak in. What is great about this destination is that it is also a stonesthrow walk away from Wildseed Cafe at The Alkaff Mansion. Although they do not serve dog food, the outdoor area is still pet friendly and they have an extensive brunch menu totally worth checking out!

Moreover, if you are looking to walk the guilt-calories from brunch off, head on over to the main part of the park, or take your adventure further onto the trail. The possibilities are endless, and undoubtedly, spectacular!

Recommended Car Drop-off: Telok Blangah Hill Park
Address: 10, Telok Blangah Green, 109178
Opening Hours: Open 24/7, daily.
